A COUPLE OF CITY LIBRARIES

Old Berlin Central Library Doors

Central Library Doors Me Trying to Make an A

Berlin Memorial Library Outside

What kinds of places do you like to visit when you go some place new? I guess I like to see "the sights" as much as anyone, but I love to not see the sights too, or at least see some sights that probably aren't in guidebooks. And I love libraries. So, whenever I visit a new place I like to see what spaces, and what knowledge and resources are open for the public. And specifically through the library.

Yesterday, we visited the Central Library, formerly of East Berlin, and formerly before that, of the Only Berlin. It's been in use since black and white photography and nice clothing, as you can see by the first photo. The second picture shows the modern view of the doors, and the third, well, I am in the process of attempting to get my unruly hair into the shape of an "A" so that I can participate in the incredible graphic representation of "A" from different times and languages." It was a beautiful facade. My A-Hair, not so much. The fourth photo is the front of the (American) Memorial Library, formerly of West Berlin, and the spot where I am writing this post.

Berlin Central Library Inside Berlin Memorial Library Inside

First is the Central Library inside, second the American Memorial inside. Both are a bit spartan, but well used. At the door of the Central Library notice the dispenser for ear plugs. Fantastic. Monika initially thought "Gumballs?" and I had a thought of toys for kids. Ear plugs! Much more sensible, though our experience was one of hushed tones and quietude. In the Central Library, among the featured books to check out in the sports section, I found a badminton set and ping pong paddles and balls available for check-out. In the Memorial Library, you can check out art, among other things. Right now, there may be a couple of hundred people working and studying. Here are two pictures of a couple of hard workers.

And another of one recovering from what looks like VERY hard work.

Not So Studious Library-Goer

P.S. I ran in Görli today. The park wasn't so great per se, but the running...!!! Loved that!

On to More Berlin (but not quite yet)

Back to the Park
